In our school, formal library instruction time ends at 6th grade. So this past year, the 6th grade teacher and I got together and had the 6th graders create a board game based on a picture book of their choice. This was a cumulative library project, incorporating elements that they had learned over the past 7 years, and they were expected to include characters, setting, plot, etc. They had to design the game, and include rules and instructions. Then, we hosted a game day and invited the lower elementary classes to come play them. The 6th graders introduced small groups to their games, and facilitated the play. The groups rotated through the games, and then at the end, each player signed a comment sheet to be given to the 6th graders. It was wonderful to see the different games, and it gave the 6th graders a good opportunity for public speaking and leadership.

That sounds like a great program - peer feedback is a fantastic way for students to learn ff one another - so is the process of teaching something they have made!

What are some of the picture books the kids picked? What sort of games did they make? How did it all turn out?

I ask because it sounds like a great idea and I'd love to see where it went!

Cheers,

Giles.
